On June 23, a new theft recovery device called Boomerang was introduced in BC. Boomerang is a vehicle and assest recovery service provided by Rankin Research Corp., of Montreal. BC TEL Mobility is the cellular network provider for Boomerang in BC . What Is It? Using cellular technology, Boomerang can track stolen vehicles anywhere among more than 900 cities across North America. Boomerang has been successful in Montreal and Toronto and will be targeted to car owners, insurance agencies, new car dealerships, car rental companies, construction and transportation industries. The device is approximately the size of a TV remote, hides somewhere in your vehicle, emits a signal regularly, can have your vehicle located within minutes of a reported theft, and sells for about the same price as a car alarm. Rankin uses its own patented and propiertary cellular technology, and does not rely on Global Positioning (GPS). The product and concept of Boomerang are very simple. The customer purchases and has installed the Boomerang unit. Once installed, the owner is not even aware of its presence. With the purchase of Boomerang, the customer is given a “credit card” style card to be kept in a safe place. In the event of a car theft, the customer simply follows the procedures indicated on the card. That procedure includes calling the 24-hour monitoring centre. The customer answers a few short questions to establish authenticity, then the vehicle is located immediately and the nearest tracking vehicle is sent to recover it, in conjunction with the local police.
