Cellular technology tracks stolen vehicles |

| TORONTO, Feb. 11 /CNW/ - Please be advised that a new tracking system, capable of locating stolen vehicles within minutes, will be previewed Thursday, February 12, 1998 at the Canadian International Auto Show at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Known as BOOMERANG, the tracking device utilizes cellular technology, not satellites, to pinpoint the location of a stolen vehicle anywhere in North America where there is a cell phone network. In Canada, BOOMERANG uses the Bell Mobility network. Developed by the Montreal-based Rankin Research Corporation, the BOOMERANG unit is the size of a television remote control. It is concealed inside the vehicle and is activated when a vehicle is stolen. A 24-hour central monitoring headquarters determines the general position through Bell Mobility, dispatches the nearest unmarked tracking vehicle, which picks up the signal, locates the vehicle and calls in the local police. In Montreal and Ottawa where the system has been available for almost a year, stolen vehicles were successfully recovered within 20 to 90 minutes. More information on this vehicle recovery system may be obtained at the BOOMERANG news conference, Thursday February 12, 1998, 1:30 P.M. at the Canadian International Auto Show, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, North Building, Room 205A. Videotapes explaining the technology will be made available to the media and the tracking van will be on display. An actual demonstration can be arranged through Investigative Services, an investigation agency located in Oakville, Ontario, which provides tracking services for BOOMERANG in Ontario. Demonstrations may also be arranged at any time for members of the media who are not able to attend the auto show by calling the contact below. |
