Car thieves beware. Montreal-based Boomerang Tracking Inc. has set up shop in Mississauga and is watching over cars in the GTA.

In February 2002, Boomerang Tracking opened a regional office at 1510 Drew Rd. in Mississauga.

"In the last four years, we have been able to successfully recover 2,100 vehicles (worth more than) $110 million," said Boomerang's vice president of sales and development Serge Laporte.

Laporte said Boomerang Tracking has over 100 employees monitoring more than 120,000 devices across North America and Mexico. For customers in the GTA, he says, Boomerang Tracking can "track a car within an hour."

The Boomerang system involves hiding a small box within your car.

The cost ranges from $449 for the basic system to $599 for the advanced system. There are also monthly monitoring fees of $8.95 for multi-year packages or customers can pay month-to-month for around $11. While there are certain targeting areas for thieves in the GTA where you would find more luxury cars, Laporte emphasizes, the whole of the greater Toronto area is susceptible to car theft. The main targets include, 4-by-4's and luxury cars including BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Acura.

"Plus, you have the smaller cars, like the Honda Civic, which are extremely popular with thieves."

Boomerang Tracking is also focusing on the transport and construction industries.

On a volume basis, Ontario has surpassed Quebec in terms of the number of car thefts, Laporte said. These thieves are more likely to steal your car for export or a chop-shop then to take it for a joy-ride, he said.

Laporte said the Boomerang system is more effective than others because of its use of cellular technology.

"You have a lot of companies that offer GPS products, which are satellite based.

"The problem with satellite-based products is that GPS does not allow you to locate a vehicle that is parked indoors or in metal containers."

Boomerang Tracking Inc. markets and distributes the Boomerang® tracking devices, proprietary products using technology patented by the Company. The Boomerang, Boomerang2™ and GSM-based units are the central devices in a system that uses the wireless networks of major regional telecommunications companies for tracking stolen assets. The Boomerang Tracking System is capable of locating stolen automobiles, heavy equipment and valuable assets. As a result of its success, the Company has received the endorsement of members of the insurance industry. The Boomerang devices are available and installed through a network of authorized dealers in Quebec and Ontario. The Company's head office, research and development centre and manufacturing facilities are located in Montreal, Quebec, with regional facilities located in Mississauga, Ontario. Boomerang Tracking is a wholly owned subsidiary of LoJack Corporation (NASDAQ:LOJN).
