In the early morning of Friday, February 21, 2003, thieves drove off with a Bobcat excavator and Chevrolet dump truck from a London area construction site. The report of the theft to Boomerang Tracking initiated a tracking operation that led to the arrest of two individuals and the recovery of several valuable pieces of heavy equipment.
The Boomerang team tracked the stolen assets from just outside of London until Ontario Provincial Police stopped the stolen convoy on the eastbound 401 Highway just outside of Gananoque, Ontario. The tracking operation led not only to the recovery of these valuable assets but also to the recovery of three additional pieces of equipment reported stolen, including a GMC Topkick truck, another trailer and a John Deere bulldozer, representing a collective value of approximately $250,000.
According to the Toronto Construction Association, thieves walk or drive off Ontario construction sites with over $12 million worth of equipment each year. Canada-wide, the losses come to $32 million. “Construction theft is big business. Contractors not only face increased overhead, operating, security and insurance costs, but also scheduling hurdles and lost man-hours of production,” stated Serge Laporte, Vice-President of Sales and International Business Development, Boomerang Tracking Inc. “With the Boomerang Tracking System, contractors can be assured that their assets are well protected 24 hours a day, seven days a week.” concluded Mr. Laporte.
The Boomerang Tracking System utilizes leading-edge wireless technology to locate automobiles and heavy equipment anytime, anywhere in North America. To date, the system has led to the recovery of over 2,200 vehicles and heavy equipment valued at over $112 million.
The Boomerang and Boomerang2 devices are the central devices in a cellular-based asset tracking system utilizing the wireless systems of major regional telecommunications companies. The Boomerang Tracking System is capable of locating stolen automobiles, heavy equipment and valuable objects. The Boomerang Tracking System is installed through a network of authorized dealers located throughout the provinces of Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia.
