MONTREAL - The Insurance Bureau of Canada has released its annual report on car thefts across the country, and it appears that when a car is stolen in Quebec, chances are it hasn''t been taken by somebody looking for a joyride.

The Insurance Bureau reported that cars that are stolen in Quebec rarely make it back to their owners. Indeed, the majority of cars stolen in Montreal are sold off by organized crime rings.

Only 40 per cent of cars stolen in Montreal are ever located, while in Vancouver, 90 per cent turn up after a few days.

Bernard Marchand, a policy analyst with the Montreal branch of the Insurance Bureau, said that organized crime rings in Quebec are specialists in the art of dismantling cars and selling them off by piece.

Hyundai''s Tiburon sportscar is the number-one target in Quebec, and in the rest of Canada. Two SUVs—the Envoy and the Trailblazer—cost Quebec''s insurance companies the most money when they''re stolen.

Marchand warned consumers to be aware of how popular the car they want is with thieves before making a purchase.

"You may buy the car of your dreams, but don''t forget you''ll also have to pay the price on your insurance premium," he said.

Marchand said that auto insurance rates would drop across the country if all cars were equipped with special anti-theft devices.

Some manufacturers install these immobilizers on the factory floor, but cars can also be outfitted after the fact.
