Increase in Vehicle Theft
Vehicle
thefts in the United States increased by 5.7 % in 2001 and
9.2% in suburban areas in 2002*

motor vehicles were stolen in 2001*
The
odds of a motor vehicle being stolen in the United States
increased to 1 in 194 in 2001*
The
average U.S. comprehensive insurance premium rose 6.6 % from
1996 to 2000.***
The
continued increase in motor vehicle thefts in 2001 was the
result of a variety of factors, including the slowing U.S.
economy, the reassignment of many law enforcement officers
from auto theft task forces, and international borders that
are difficult to monitor ***

Though we cannot determine with absolute certainty the reason
for vehicle theft, trends show that cars are often stolen
for the value of their parts. Vehicle theft historically follows
consumers’ choices, which is reflected in the popularity
of imports and the gaining popularity of trucks and SUVs among

Theft
by Geographic Region
The
greatest increase, 12.9%, occurred in the West while the South
reported a rise of 4.0% and the Midwestern states showed a
3.4% increase*
In
California, the highest theft volume state in the country,
thieves historically prefer
imports - a trend that continued in 2002. ***
In
2002, nearly 2,000 stolen U.S. vehicles were returned from
Mexico, worth approximately $19 million.***
All
of the top ten U.S. metropolitan areas for vehicle theft are
in or near ports or communities with easy access to Mexican
or Canadian borders *** (2002)
